As the NHS marked its 73rd Anniversary, Watford’s MP celebrated NHS, Social Care & Frontline Workers’ Day at the Town Hall to pay tribute to those that have worked so hard to keep the country going during the pandemic.
It was an opportunity to celebrate and show appreciation to not only the fantastic NHS and social care staff, but also those who have kept our shops open, shelves stocked, streets safe and essential services operating. It was also a poignant opportunity to remember those who lost their lives to Covid-19.
Speaking after the event Dean Russell said “it was an honour to be invited to today’s event. There are so many people who deserve our gratitude, so many keyworkers were not able to stay at home, and those people continued to go to work every day – even during the earliest days of lockdown when there was a lot of uncertainty. Refuse collectors, supermarket staff, HGV drivers, public transport staff and so many more deserve our sincere thanks and appreciation.
“I would also like to once again pay tribute to our NHS staff. Today it was announced that our Health Service has been awarded the George Cross by Her Majesty The Queen on the day that the NHS marks its 73rd anniversary. The George Cross is awarded for "acts of the greatest heroism or of the most courage in circumstances of extreme danger" and the NHS is a very worthy recipient of this award.
In a note to the NHS the Queen wrote to all NHS staff that “You have our enduring thanks and heartfelt appreciation” and I echo these words wholeheartedly.”
