Watford’s MP joined the local community at a moving event to mark the anniversary of the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian families joined people from across Watford to mark one year since the Russian invasion.
The event commenced at 11am with a minute’s silence followed by the raising of the Ukrainian flag at the Town Hall. Watford Central Library then hosted a ‘Ukraine in my heart’ art exhibition giving visitors the chance to learn about Ukrainian culture. A ‘Service of unity’ was then held at the Peace Memorial ahead of a procession to St Mary’s Church.
The day of support was hosted by the Watford FC Former Players Club and their Ukraine project the ‘Sunflower Social Club.’
The group was established by Lauren Fox, the partner of Watford and England legend Luther Blissett, and works provide support where necessary to refugees from the conflict. and also helps to maintain cultural identity.
Speaking after the ceremony Dean said “The support given to the Sunflower Social Club locally has been really heart-warming. It is really important that we continue to demonstrate our unwavering solidarity with Ukraine. I am grateful for the actions of so many people in Watford, who have made donations and vital contributions to help Ukrainians in need. I’d also like to reiterate my thanks to those that have opened up their homes to Ukrainian families.”
