Dean Russell MP

Dean Russell MP visited the Stanborough Secondary School in Watford to host an assembly and take some questions from the students.

Stanborough Secondary was founded in 1919, and now has a Primary School as well as an Early Learning Unit. They have previously taken part in the debate competition with other schools that Dean holds in Parliament every year.

Dean spoke to the students about the role of an MP, from running as a candidate to winning an election, and his future plans for Watford. He shared with students his work on rough sleeping in Watford, the online safety bill, and how exactly a bill works its way through the stages of Parliament into law.

Students got to ask Dean about our voting system and his thoughts on the local election results. They also raised important issues such as the representation of women in Parliament, equal pay, and asked about any specific qualifications needed to become an MP.

Speaking after the assembly Dean said, ‘the year 7 pupils asked some fantastic questions about working in Parliament and how our democracy functions as a whole, and it is great to see so many students develop an interest and passion for politics. I was grateful to be able to share with the students my story of getting into politics, and how they to can be successful in whatever they want to do in life. I look forward to meeting the rest of the school on future visits to Stanborough. ‘
