Kingsway Assembly

Watford MP Dean Russell joined Kingsway Junior School for an assembly and a Q&A with the pupils.

Dean spoke to the pupils about the role of an MP and heard about how they are a UNICEF Rights Respecting Silver award school, working towards gaining their gold award.

The award is granted by UNICEF UK to schools that show good progress towards embedding children’s rights in the school’s policy, practice and ethos. There are three stages to the Rights Respecting Schools Award, and its rigorous approach means the journey to the highest stage can take up to four years.

Together young people and the school community learn about children’s rights, putting them into practice every day. The Award is not just about what children do but also what adults do.

There are four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school - wellbeing, participation, relationships and self-esteem.

Speaking after the assembly Dean said “the pupils asked some really interesting questions about Parliament and democracy as a whole, it was great to see that they have developed an interest in this area. I’d also like to congratulate the school for achieving silver level of the UNICEF Rights Respecting Awards, I have no doubt they will reach gold level very soon.”
