The Horizon scandal was a terrible miscarriage of justice that has impacted many, many lives. When Dean was the Minister for Post Offices, he made it his first priority to look into this issue.
During a recent debate in the House of Commons, Dean asked a question to the Minister, highlighting the need for prompt and decisive action.
Dean expressed gratitude to Alan Bates for his tireless efforts in championing the cause of the victims of the Horizon scandal. He acknowledged the real impact it has had on those affected and thanked Mr Bates for standing up against one of the worst injustices ever witnessed in the United Kingdom.
Dean sought assurances from the Post Office Minister that the government is actively engaged at the highest levels to eliminate any delays or blockages hindering the pursuit of justice, including the critical aspect of full and fair compensation for the victims.
Mr Russell recommended that all Members of Parliament, both current and future, familiarise themselves with the insights provided by 'The Great Post Office Scandal' by Nick Wallis. This book inspired an ITV drama and played a role in bringing the Horizon scandal to light. Dean believes that understanding the depth and complexity of the issue is crucial for legislators as they work toward rectifying the failures that led to this cruel injustice.
Following the meeting Dean said,
‘In the House of Commons, I raised a key question to the Post Office Minister, stressing the urgent need for swift and decisive action.
I expressed my sincere thanks to Alan Bates for his tireless and dedicated work on behalf of the victims, acknowledging the real and lasting impact this scandal has had on all those sadly affected.
I sought assurances from the Post Office Minister, urging the government's active engagement at the highest levels to eliminate any delays or blockages hindering justice. The Minister advised that this is being taken very seriously, and the Prime Minister is also being kept updated. Full and fair compensation for the victims is a crucial aspect that cannot be compromised. This simply cannot happen again’.
