Dean Russell, Member of Parliament for Watford, visited Watford Museum today, highlighting the significant role museums play in preserving our cultural heritage and promoting community engagement.
During the visit, Dean was advised about the ‘Watford Museum on Tour’ which is a series of events starting in the October half term at Cassiobury Park. This will be accessible to everyone in the community. The tour will seek to create an immersive experience that connects Watfordians with their vibrant historical announcements.
There is currently a brilliant exhibition of work by Victoria Lyons in the Upper Gallery of hand drawn pictures. You can find out more about her work here www.victorialyonsart.com
It was great to speak with the staff team who spoke passionately about their plans for future large scale exhibitions.
The museum includes Watford History of breweries, printing, Cassiobury Estate, Watford Football Club. There was also a section on ‘Watford during the war’ which was the inspiration for the popular television programme ‘Dad’s Army’.
Earlier this year, £68,000 was given to the new museum project by the National Lottery Heritage fund. The funding will help to develop the plans to relocate Watford Museum to Watford Town Hall where a new venue will tell the town’s story, bringing together local history from across the centuries. The new space will also include a Museum shop and a café.
Dean stated, "Watford Museum plays an essential role in our community, preserving our heritage and providing a platform for education and appreciation of art and history. I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of the museum staff who make this possible."
