Dean participated in LBC’s Cross Questions radio show to talk about the important issues facing the country now.
Cross Questions is a weekly radio show on LBC hosted by Iain Dale. The panel is made up of four guests from across the political spectrum, with listeners ringing or texting in to choose the topics of debate.
On Wednesday’s show, Dean appeared alongside Prospect Magazine’s Jonathan Lis, journalist Oz Katerji, and the IEA’s Annabel Denham. They spoke about a range of issues including upcoming by-elections, HGV drivers, the appropriate support for energy companies, and Northern Ireland.
When asked about the current shortages of HGV drivers, Dean said: “Over time (being an HGV driver) became a cheapened job, the wages stagnated, it was seen as a replaceable job. That meant that over the early 2000s you ended up with people not wanting to go into that profession and that led to British workers not becoming lorry drivers, more EU workers coming over being paid less than they should be, and it meant that the quality of life went down and it became an interchangeable job.”
Later in the show, the panellists were asked about what action should be taken to support the country’s energy companies. Dean explained that he is against the nationalisation of energy companies and said: “The idea of the government coming in and supporting organisations during a difficult time to get it right is important, but the idea of the government taking back state control is, for me, not the right way of resolving it.”
