I was delighted the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Steve Barclay, accepted my invitation to visit Watford General.
During his visit, the Secretary of State was able to see first-hand the pressures on the NHS, including the current rise in Covid and flu cases, and spoke with hospital staff in A&E and those who pioneered the technology to deliver care via virtual wards.
Most importantly, we discussed the much needed and anticipated hospital rebuild which I have been unapologetically campaigning for since being elected.
The visit was an important opportunity to not only show first-hand the impact this would make for patients and staff alike, but also showcase the UK-leading innovations at Watford in virtual wards and digital health.
We also met the inspirational team behind the UK’s first Virtual Hospital which was set up at Watford General in 2020 to help with the surge in Covid patients. More than 5,000 Covid patients have been treated via the Virtual Hospital saving thousands of ‘bed days’ whilst keeping patients safe.
I would like to thank all the hospital staff we met for their invaluable feedback and insights.
