Friday 3rd March was an important date.
We are one step closer to fairness for millions of workers who will have the legal right to retain their tips and gratuities. My Tips Bill has now gone though the House of Lords, and I would like to put on record my sincere thanks toVirginia Crosbie for sponsoring the Bill & Lord Robathan for his support.
Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston CBE is the Minister of State in the Department of Business and Trade who is overseeing the Bill.
I have been campaigning for my Tips Bill for several years, and I am delighted that the new legislation will ensure that tips and gratuities given by customers can no longer be kept by businesses but will rightly be passed on directly or shared as part of a team.
I sincerely hope that this will demonstrate a clear end for any customer needing to ask if the member of staff or team will receive their tip, as they will know it is a legal requirement to do so. Throughout the Bill, we will see a new statutory Code of Practice which will be developed to provide businesses and staff with appropriate advice on how the tips should be distributed.
