Dean Russell, MP for Watford, expressed his thanks and appreciation to local news outlets in the Digital Markets Competition and Consumers Bill Committee for their invaluable work in providing local news to Watford residents and the wider community.
The Bill aims to create a fair and competitive digital environment for news providers with a clear focus on supporting local journalism. If the challenges posed are addressed by digital platforms, we can safeguard the crucial role that local news outlets play in all our communities.
Dean asked Peter Wright, (Editor Emeritus, DMG Media) if local media would benefit from the Bill. The answer was a resounding yes; more so than for any other media outlet.
Following the committee Dean said, ‘I absolutely recognise the role played by local news channels in providing accurate, timely, and relevant information to the people in the local area. Media outlets such as ‘My Local News’ and the ‘Watford Observer’ keep us informed about local events, showcase local achievements and hold authorities accountable for their actions. These hyperlocal papers and online resources are invaluable for residents to rely on’.
