As part of the Parliamentary Remembrance Garden, Dean dedicated #Watford’s stake to brave Captain Tom Sawyer, who tragically lost his life when serving in Afghanistan in 2009.
Capt Sawyer served in the Zulu Company of The Royal Artillery, and died next to his comrade Corporal Danny Winter of 45 Commando. They were only 26 and 28 respectively.
The two servicemen were involved in a joint operation with Danish forces, providing fire support from a rooftop 800 metres from the Forward Operation Base Gibraltar, surrounded by Taliban hideouts.
Dean commemorates Tom and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could enjoy our freedoms today. Nothing will take away the pain of losing a loved one, but Dean hopes Tom’s family will take solace in knowing that we will forever honour Tom’s life and service.
The Thomas Sawyer Way in Watford signifies a permanent connection with our local hero, and Dean would like to thank Tom’s family for allowing him to share his story with colleagues in Parliament.
Lest we forget
