Local MP Dean Russell attended The Watford Pump House Theatre and Arts Centre to commemorate their 50th birthday celebrations.
The theatre has been running for nearly 50 years and in this time has provided a platform for incredible art, music, dance and drama. They are a hub for emerging talent and an active leader in Watford’s cultural development.
The building used to be the old pumping station supplying water to the Watford area. In the early 1970s the building was converted to provide a theatre auditorium and rehearsal room. Many other developments and improvements have been carried out over the years that have led to the existence of a vibrant arts centre with superb facilities that supports the best of local community and professional arts.
Dean Russell said following the celebrations that the "Pump House is a gem of Watford’s cultural scene. What they have achieved over the years is really impressive.
"50 years after a dedicated group of volunteers with very limited resources converted a rundown building, the Pump House has grown to be a strong hub for the best of community art and culture. This local success story and shows the talent and commitment Watford has. The creative arts are so important for all of us, we all enjoy music or watching our favourite programme or a classic film, and the creative sector is one that we all benefit from."
