Local MP Dean Russell visited Royal Mail’s Watford Delivery Office on Caxton Way to test drive one of their new electric vehicles. The new delivery fleet at the Watford Delivery Office will be moving from diesel to electric and will consist of 108 vehicles in total.
The Watford fleet is part of the plans to introduce around 3,000 additional, low-emission vans throughout the UK. Royal Mail will additionally introduce charging points to all the Delivery Offices set to receive the vehicles. The vehicles are specially designed to help postmen and women deliver letters and parcels in a secure and environmentally friendly way.
With the UK's largest 'Feet on the Street' network of over 85,000 postmen and women Royal Mail already has the lowest reported carbon emissions per parcel of any major UK delivery company, but they are striving to go further.
Dean Russell said “It was a pleasure to visit the team at the Watford Delivery Office this morning. They were incredibly busy but took the time to talk me through their new fleet and let me have a quick go in one of the new vehicles.
"It is encouraging to see large business leading by example in providing sustainable services for customers and communities, and also the environment. It was really helpful to spend the morning learning about their commitment to reducing emissions and to delivering a cleaner future. They deliver approximately 50,000 parcels a week, so it is fantastic that this is now being done in a greener and more sustainable way.”
