Watford MP Dean Russell has spoken out against plans to convert Pryzm nightclub into 147 homes. He has presented a petition to Parliament declaring that Pryzm should not be closed as it is the only town-based nightclub in Hertfordshire and is a long-standing part of the culture of Watford.

The Pryzm site has a long history in Watford, and has previously been home to Destiny, Oceana, Kudos, Paradise Lost and Baileys. It employs more than 100 members of staff and generates vital business for neighbouring bars, restaurants, takeaways, and local taxi firms, who have expressed huge concerns about how this would severely impact their businesses.

The plans have drawn more than 300 individual objections, demonstrating the strength of feeling from Watford residents. The Watford Business Improvement District have warned of the hugely devastating and detrimental effect this would have if the plans were given the green light.

Dean met with Dave Vickery, the Manager of Pryzm, and thanked him for his campaign. Mr Vickery commented, “The campaign started when the application was submitted to the planning committee. The support from all age groups has been amazing. It's a great place for young people to come to, and I hope we can make progress. I would like to thank Dean for his support.”

Maria Manion Chief Executive of Watford BID said “Pryzm, in its many guises, has been part of Watford’s cultural heritage for decades. The impact of a venue such as Pryzm on other businesses in the town cannot be underestimated.

“We estimate around £170,000 is spent in town on an average Saturday night as a direct result of Pryzm…The loss of the club will have an impact on Watford as a destination and on the economic and social stability of the town.”

Following his submission of the petition to Parliament, Dean said “If Pryzm closes it will have a seriously detrimental effect on the local economy, not just the local bars and restaurants but shopkeepers and taxi drivers.

“I know many people have raised with me the personal significance of the nightclub too, with many creating memories, forging friendships and forming relationships at the venue over the decades. The nightclub forms part of the fabric of our town and brings thousands of visitors.

“In addition to presenting the petition in parliament, I am also writing to all parties to request an urgent meeting to raise the concerns residents and local businesses have regarding the risk of closure.”

They say a week is a long time in politics and that couldn’t be more true with the election only just a week or so ago.  Now that my Parliamentary office has been emptied, my pass has been deactivated, my meetings have begun on my team’s redundancies and winding down has started, I felt it wou
