Recently reported news that the UK economy is set for a resurgence not seen since World War Two has provided a much-needed boost to consumer confidence. The economic outlook also coincided with the announcement that unemployment has fallen to 4.8%, largely in part to the continuation of the furlough scheme that has protected jobs throughout lockdown.
As a small business ambassador, I have seen first-hand the importance role our small businesses have played throughout the pandemic. There is no doubt that small businesses are the backbone of our economy, they make up 99% of all UK businesses. Having spoken to many business owners across Watford I have been encouraged to hear people are buying local and supporting our local economy in doing so. I encourage everyone across Watford to continue this trend as we approach the summer months.
Of course, when it comes to the summer, I also know that many will be looking forward to jetting off to somewhere warm. But sadly, with the virus still dominant in many places abroad, this summer is also an opportunity to enjoy a good old British staycation.
Our country has so much to offer, from natural beauty to sightseeing, from Cornwall to the Cotswolds, Brighton to Bournemouth and Norfolk to North Devon. If there was ever a year to take full advantage of what is on our doorstep, then this is the year. We may not have the consistency of hot weather and palm trees that other countries have to offer, but it is easy to see why the UK is one of the most visited countries in the world, our green spaces and historical sites are world famous, as are our theatres and museums.
In the UK this summer we will see the return of Wimbledon, we are hosting a number of Euro 2020 matches and so much more. So, after months of lockdown and uncertainty we can now look forward - so let's support local businesses in Watford and across the UK. We have faced such immense difficulties over the past year, so now is the time to support out local businesses and have a truly great British Summer.
