The UK has long led the way on animal welfare. However, like many constituents, I was concerned to hear that the government will no longer be taking forward the Kept Animals Bill, despite assurances I received from the Minister on 4th May 2023.
There was concern that the bill would be amended so much that it would not resemble the original intentions, as set out in the Animal Welfare Action Plan, and be difficult to pass through Parliament - what we call a ‘Christmas Tree Bill’.
